How to split the cost of a football match without drama (and without the same person always paying)
We all know the scene. The match finished three days ago and two people still haven’t paid. Whoever booked the pitch put in 50 euros of their own money and now they’re playing debt collector on WhatsApp. Again.
Splitting the cost of a match isn’t hard. The hard part is doing it without the organiser ending up burnt out. Here are the real numbers, the payment methods compared with no nonsense, and the rules that actually work in a group of mates.
What a match really costs
In Spain, hiring a 7-a-side pitch or a floodlit futsal court usually runs between 30 and 60 euros an hour. In Madrid or Barcelona you’ll typically pay 45-60. In Andalusia the range drops: in towns like Jerez, El Puerto or Chiclana it’s easy to find a pitch for 30 to 45 euros, and council-run facilities tend to be cheaper still if you’re a member.
The per-head maths is simple and almost always a pleasant surprise. A 42-euro pitch split between 14 players works out at 3 euros each. Between 10, it’s 4.20. Cheaper than a beer and a tapa. The price is never the problem: collecting it is.
Watch out for the extras nobody budgets for: the ball that needs replacing every few months, the bibs, the water. If the group plays every week, build a small margin into the kitty and save yourselves the arguments.
- €40 pitch between 10 players: €4 each
- €45 pitch between 12 players: €3.75 each
- €50 pitch between 14 players: €3.57 each
- Usual extras: ball (€20-30 a couple of times a year), bibs (€15-20), water
The ways of collecting the money, compared without mercy
Cash. Quick if everyone has it on them, which is exactly what never happens. Nobody has 3.57 euros in change, someone ends up owing, and the organiser walks away with a fistful of coins and two mental IOUs.
Bizum, Spain’s instant bank-transfer app. The standard here, and with good reason: the money lands instantly and everyone has it. The general limits are plenty for a match: minimum 0.50 euros, maximum 1,000 per transaction and around 2,000 a day, though each bank can tweak its own. The flaw isn’t Bizum, it’s memory: if you don’t note down who’s paid, by next week nobody remembers.
Tricount or Splitwise. They log who owes what and do the sums for you. Perfect for a trip away, middling for a weekly match: they don’t move the money, they only record it, so you’re still left chasing payment. And every expense has to be keyed in by hand.
A shared kitty. Everyone puts in 10-20 euros a month and everything comes out of that. Works in very stable groups. It needs a treasurer everyone trusts, transparent accounts, and a decision on what happens when someone misses half the matches and feels like they’re paying for everyone else’s.
The three classics that wreck the kitty
The “I’ll pay you Thursday”. Thursday becomes Sunday, Sunday becomes next month, and once it’s only 3 euros it feels embarrassing to chase. The small debt is the most dangerous kind, because it never seems urgent.
The organiser-as-bank. The person who books fronts the whole pitch every week. If 14 play, they’ve lent 50 euros to 13 people. One bad month of collections and they’re more than 100 euros out of pocket. It’s the number-one reason people stop organising matches, and without an organiser there’s no match.
The one who doesn’t turn up and doesn’t pay. Said yes on Monday, dropped out on Friday at 8.40pm, and their share gets absorbed by the ones who did show up. If it happens twice with no consequences, it will happen forever. This is the one that breaks up the most groups, because it mixes money with the feeling of being taken for a mug.
Rules that work (agreed beforehand, not after)
Pay before you play. The golden rule. If you’ve paid, you’ve got a spot; if you haven’t, you don’t count for the match. It sounds harsh and it’s exactly the opposite: it gets rid of the debt-collector role and the awkward conversations. Nobody takes offence at a rule that’s the same for everyone.
Drop-outs have a deadline. Agree one: for example, you can pull out free of charge up to 24 hours before; after that, your spot gets paid for unless a replacement steps in. Substitutes only pay if they play. With that in place, giving decent notice stops being a courtesy and becomes the norm.
The surplus gets decided as a group. If the kitty grows, there are three honourable ways out: knock it off the next match, buy a ball and bibs, or a round of drinks at the end of the season. The only thing that’s off-limits is letting it sit in limbo in someone’s pocket, however good their intentions.
When an app beats all of the above
If you play once a quarter, Bizum and a pinned message in the group chat will see you right. The step up matters when the match is weekly: that’s when the same sums repeat, memory fails and the organiser gets fed up.
The sign you need something better: the organiser spends more time collecting money than picking the teams. That’s what apps built for weekly football are for. On Haypartido, for example, you set up your kickabout for free, send the link round on WhatsApp, and the cost tracker shows at a glance who’s paid their share and who hasn’t, without anyone having to point fingers. The list does the dirty work.
And if one day you’d rather join an open match that’s already set up, you pay for your spot alone and forget the kitty entirely. Everyone covers their own share, the price is clear, and off you go.
Frequently asked questions
How much does each player pay for a 7-a-side match?
It depends on the pitch and how many of you there are. With typical Spanish prices of 30 to 60 euros an hour, between 10 and 14 players it works out at 2.50 to 6 euros a head. In Andalusia it tends to sit at the lower end of that range.
What’s the Bizum limit for paying for the pitch?
The general limits are a minimum of 0.50 euros and a maximum of 1,000 euros per transaction, with guideline caps of around 2,000 euros a day and 5,000 a month. Each bank can adjust them, but for a 4-euro pitch payment you’ve got room to spare.
What do I do if someone doesn’t pay after the match?
Remind them once, in private, no drama. If it keeps happening, change the group rule to pay-before-you-play: if you haven’t paid, you haven’t got a spot. It’s the only rule that kills the problem at the root without personal arguments.
Should someone who books a spot and doesn’t turn up still pay?
If they give decent notice (up to 24 hours before is the usual), no. If they drop out at the last minute and nobody takes their place, it’s only fair they pay, because their gap makes the match dearer for everyone else. Agree it in writing in the group chat before it happens.
Does a substitute pay even if they don’t play?
No. The rule that works best is that a substitute only pays if they get on the pitch. That way there are always people happy to sign up as subs, and last-minute drop-outs hurt less.
What do we do with money left over in the kitty?
Decide as a group, and soon: knock it off the next match, put it towards a ball and bibs, or spend it on an end-of-season round. What matters is that the balance is visible to everyone and doesn’t sleep in the organiser’s pocket.
